WerkTakt lives in the menu bar at the top right – a stopwatch icon, or an orange dot with the time while the timer runs. Left-click opens the timer, right-click the menu. A Dock icon only appears while a window such as the Journal is open.

Can’t see the icon? With many menu bar items it may be hidden behind the camera notch. On macOS 26 or later, also check System Settings → Menu Bar to make sure WerkTakt is allowed.

Fastest with ⌃ ⌥ T: type a name, ↵ – the project is created and the timer starts. Manage clients, hourly rates, rounding and budgets in the Journal (⌘ J) with “+ Client” and “+ Project” in the sidebar, or double-click an item.

Right-click the icon → “Repeat Getting Started”. A guided tour dims the screen, highlights the next target and points at it with an arrow – you try every step yourself. The illustrated overview is under “Show Tutorial”.

On first launch, WerkTakt uses your Mac’s language (English, German, French, Spanish or Italian; English for other languages). Choose another one under Settings → Language; after “Restart Now” it applies everywhere.

Right-click the icon → Settings → “Launch at Login”.

Press ⌃ ⌥ T in any app, type a few letters, pick with ↑ ↓ and confirm with ↵. ⇥ adds a note. The running entry ends at the exact moment the new one begins.

If you were away from your Mac with the timer running, WerkTakt asks when you’re back: keep the time, subtract it and continue, or subtract it and stop. Choose when it asks under Settings → Inactivity. You can also double-click any entry in the Journal to correct it.

Yes. In the Journal you can add entries manually or change the start, end, project and note of an existing entry.

Both are set per project. Rounding (exact, 1, 5, 6, 10, 15, 30 or 60 minutes) rounds each entry up. Amounts are calculated from hours rounded to 1/100 – so the total on the timesheet matches your invoice exactly.

In the Journal, choose a client or project and a period, then “Timesheet (PDF)…” from the share button. You can show or hide amounts, times of day, non-billable time and a sign-off field. Add your letterhead once in Settings.

Choose a period in the Journal, then “Entries as CSV…” from the share button. The file opens directly in Excel or Numbers.

Only locally on your Mac, in WerkTakt’s protected app container. It’s included in your Time Machine backup. WerkTakt sends nothing to the internet.

Once a day WerkTakt saves a backup file (.werktakt) to a folder of your choice and keeps the last 30 days. Choose a folder in iCloud Drive and you’ll find your backups on a new Mac as well. Set it up under Settings → Backup.

Install WerkTakt on the new Mac. On first launch choose “New Mac? Restore from a backup…” – or later under Settings → Backup → “Restore…” – and pick the latest backup file.

Quit the app (right-click → Quit WerkTakt) and drag it from Applications to the Trash. Your data lives in ~/Library/Containers/at.feisoft.werktakt; delete that folder to remove all your hours too. Delete backups in your chosen folder yourself.
